Bed smells wrong. Feels wrong. Not mine! was how she came awake the next morning, or later, or whenever. She could taste alcohol on her breath, but before her mind could run through scenarios, such as celebrating her assignment with Alex, it all rolled in. Or rather she did, when the side of the bed depressed and she clutched the mattress to stop herself sliding. Her arms protested their soreness and her upper body was abraded and her lower—

She forced her eyes open, although she’d rather have squeezed them shut tight, and looked at Hunter, sitting on the side of the bed, freshly showered and buttoning his shirt. A tie hung from his collar, ready to be fastened.

“Good morning.” His voice and face were sombre. “I left you a coffee. I can walk you back to the house, if you leave now? I have to go.”

“Morning,” Chessy croaked, sitting. She reached for the coffee and hid behind the mug. Frowning, she squinted at him. “Is everything…all right?”

Hunter shrugged. “Funerals are never much fun, I’m given to understand.”

“Oh God. I didn’t realize. I’m sorry. I thought… Don’t bother about me. I can make my own way to the house.”

“Chessy.” He took the cup from her and replaced it on the dressing table. “Will you be at the service? I know all the staff are going.”

“Oh! If you want me to be.”

He nodded. Oh, stupid me. She could try and investigate, for want of a better word, and they might gain some information about his poor brother.

“Then of course.” Chessy nodded, a little fast, turning her face up for the kiss he bestowed as he rose and left. “And once again, I’m so sorry, Hunter.”

She waited until the sound of his car told her he’d left, then set about creeping back to the house, an employee’s version of a walk of shame, trying to sneak in unnoticed. Not an easy task, with people milling about, coming and going, being shown around, but covered in a long coat she’d helped herself to, she more or less managed and was ready in the hall when Sharon guided them into the black cars waiting.

Cars was the theme of the day, not surprisingly. People couldn’t stop exclaiming over the number of Blake Meridians at Greenwich Cemetery. So many people had chosen to drive them to the ceremony, creating an amazing sight. Jack had been much loved in the racing world and popular at the company, Chessy learned. There were many teary eyes, and one woman was in floods. So many people wanted to speak, to share memories of him, at the service and after, on the short walk among the yew trees to the family mausoleum standing stark-white and square on a slight hill.

Hunter had been near the front of the church, taller, broader and darker than the group of fairer-haired family, and now he stood at the head of the procession. Chessy didn’t see if he’d been the one to open the door of the vault, but he was one of those who stepped inside to place the urn.
